Information about Vincent

Teaching Philosophy

Music is an essential compartment, filling our lives with love, peace, hope and dreams. Music is meant to be an all-inclusive world built with talented people of all kinds of personalities and backgrounds. Any aspiring musician can succeed by starting to appreciate music of different styles and genres. There are countless ways to sing, play an instrument, compose music and perform. It's the student's chance to find where they belong in this magnificent world of music.

My curriculums are personalised for each and every one of my students. I always start with a questionnaire to get to know the student and they hope to get out of their music lessons. No musical background is required before taking lessons. As we move forward in lessons, I help the student gain some knowledge in musical theory and history as I think it's highly beneficial for the development of a good musician. At the same time, it's important for me that students enjoy playing their instrument. This is why I'll ask my student what kinds of music they like.

Music helps me find happiness, pleasure, love and dignity for myself and others. If you already love listening to music, imagine playing music. You'll see, it's magic!

Education

I pursued the Honours Bachelor of Music Program at Carleton University. With the focus on songwriting, courses included the study of music theory, history, performance, solfege and aural training. I have been taught vocal, songwriting and performance lessons by award-winning musicians Jesse Stewart, Ian Tamblyn, Giselle Minns and Kellylee Evans.

I was happy to learn how to properly write and read music on a staff. It helps me tremendously as a songwriter, performer and arranger to convey some music of good quality. I joined a guitar ensemble, where I was taught how to sight-read sheet music for guitar and play collaborate with a group of instrumental guitarists.

I have been writing, composing and arranging songs since the age of 14. I record albums in the studio and play shows around town. Although I mainly target my music for people of my generation, I also enjoy performing songs for children and infants at a daycare. Occasionally, I visit retirement home tenants and offer musical entertainment for them as well.

I have been a classically trained vocalist since high school and evolved to pop music training once I reached university. I've been singing in choirs for 8 years, including performances at the National Arts Centre and for CBC.

Special Skills & Training

I have perfect pitch. It means I can identify exact note pitches when I hear them. It helps me a lot when I arrange music.

I come from a family of teachers. My mother finished her career specializing in teaching to kids with disabilities. Being a man with Asperger's Syndrome (part of the Autism Spectrum Disorder), I think patience is a rudimentary quality any teacher should have because you never know the way your students were born. My mother has helped accommodate my education at school and has helped me accommodate students with other kinds of challenges.

I collect CDs and own just about 2,000 of them, always looking for more. There's nothing like owning tangible music, the full quality of a sound recording, having the liner notes from the artist or about the artist, and supporting artists the right way. I reject streaming services.

Rates and Policies

Rates and Studio Policies

Registration Fee: $25.00 (One-time lifetime registration fee may be used by all family members)

Rates for instruction:

30 minute private lesson: $39.00
45 minute private lesson: $49.00
60 minute private lesson: $59.00

Travel charge: additional $15.00 per visit (for lessons in a client's home as opposed to my studio)

1. Cancellation Policy

Lessons not cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice are billable to the client and payable to the teacher. This does not of course apply to travel fees unless the notice is effectively given at the door and the teacher has travelled to the location.

2. Cessation (quitting) Policy

A client must provide a 2 lesson notice period to stop lessons. So a weekly student needs to give 2 weeks of notice, a biweekly student works out to 3 weeks notice and a twice weekly student works out to a week of notice.

3. Illness Policy

Lessons cancelled due to illness or extraordinary circumstances with less than 24 hours notice remain billable to the client and payable to the teacher.

BAH teachers are encouraged to offer a make-up lesson at a future date in the interest of client relations and general goodwill. This only makes sense as teaching a student with the flu for example, will ruin the rest of your week's employment.

No more than 2 lessons may be made up due to illness within a 60 day period.

4. Rescheduling Policy

Any lesson can be cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours notice.

Summer Vacation and Extended Absence Policy

Clients may schedule longer absences for trips etc. 24 hours notice is required.

It is normal and typical for students and about 20% of our teachers to schedule a break in the summer. We do not enforce a notice period (see cessation of lessons) at the end of a long summer break.

5. Evaluation Period

There are no free trial lessons with Beethoven at Home but we do offer a 2 lesson evaluation period where it is easy to try out a teacher. There are no free lessons during the evaluation period and clients may choose to discontinue the lessons at any time by providing the required 24 hours notice. After the student's 3rd lesson the required 2 lesson notice period will apply (see cessation of lessons above).
